4th of July

Buena Vista

We celebrated the 4th of July with a potluck dinner at the rec hall. We had good attendance, and met some of our new neighbors. Sandra and Don, the owners, are great hosts and treat all the campers like family.

We missed the morning parade in town, but I got a kick out of reading about the parade plans in the local weekly paper -- it said "if you want to be in the parade, line up at the end of Main street by 9:30 am."

We did go to the fireworks in the evening with our neighbors Denny and Mary. We drove out to the rodeo grounds. There was no set charge, just a free will donation. Cars and trucks parked in a gigantic field -- there must have been well over a thousand vehicles but still plenty of room for more. We parked and sat in front of the truck in our lawn chairs to enjoy the fireworks, with a mountain backdrop. Before the official start, lots of people were setting off their own fireworks, sort of a 'preview' of things to come. Several times a small grass fire had to be stomped out by whoever was closest. Two fire trucks were on hand just in case. The "real" fireworks were pretty good, especially for a small town. We really enjoyed ourselves -- a very good way to celebrate the 4th of July and remember what a great country we live in.
